Should you smoke e cigarettes if pregnant?

E Cigarettes has been marketed as a less harmful alternative to traditional smoking, however there has been a debate on whether E Cigarettes are acceptable for use whilst pregnant. Due to the uncertainty of the ingredients of the E Cigarettes, NHS health professionals have recommended you shouldn’t smoke E cigarettes whilst pregnant.

NHS professionals have said that due to E Cigarettes not being under the same strict regulation as tobacco products, the total list of ingredients in E Cigarettes are unknown. It is also uncertain to determine the nicotine levels as it varies between brands.

The ingredients in E Cigarettes can vary between brands, and because manufacturers of E Cigarettes aren’t regulated the same as tobacco, they don’t reveal all of the ingredients used, and due to the nature of the business and the high competition some manufactures are vague with ingredients they reveal.

For the time being the products are covered by general product safety legislation. However, the government have announced plans to regulate E Cigarettes as medicine in 2016, which means there will be more stringent testing in place before allowing GPs to prescribe them.

American Vaping Association president Gregory Conley has said: “All nicotine use during pregnancy should be avoided, whether the source be cigarettes, E Cigarettes, or nicotine replacement therapy products like nicotine gum and patches. Indeed, studies have shown that nicotine replacement therapy use by pregnant women is tied to low birth weight and preterm birth.”
