Another instalment of Tobacco Specialist’s A-Z of tobacco lexicology. Expect this one to be full of Havana inspired names.
Galera
This term is Spanish for gallery and is logically the name reserved for the workroom wherein cigars are rolled by hand.
German Blend
A blend of tobacco that is largely similar to the better-known American blend but incorporates the use of more oriental tobaccos.
Goma
Translates into gum and serves as the adhesive that is used to seal cigar leaves and the wrapper at the head.
Guajiro
The colloquial Spanish name for Cuban tobacco workers and peasants.
Guillotine
Much like its executing kinsman, the guillotine is used to make a straight and precise cut close to the cigar head. Known as the Guillotina in Spanish.
Gustation
This is the act of tasting or sensing with the mouth and tongue, often leads to a thoughtful expression upon the face.
HTF
This is an abbreviation for Hard-to-Find that is commonly used amongst cigar lovers. This abbreviation indicates the products that are particularly rare – usually discontinued items or special releases.
Habano
This is the special title reserved for cigars rolled in Cuba from exclusively Cuban tobacco leaves – highly sought after cigars.
Habano Seed
Many tobacco plants claim to be a direct descendant of the Habano seed to identify it as a tobacco of class and prestige. The Habano seed has been heavily hybridised and cross-bred.
Half Wheel
Sometimes known as a ‘Bundle’ this is a pack of either 25 or 50 cigars tied together with a ribbon or packaged in cellophane.
Hand
Sometimes known as a Gavilla, this is the organisational method of bunching tobacco leaves together to undergo fermentation.
Havana
The capital city of Cuba and undoubtedly the metropolitan centre of the World’s cigar production and shipping.
Havana-Obsessed Consumers
Many people believe that only Cuban cigars can be considered to be true cigars and products of the highest quality. This is particularly pertinent in the USA where Cuban products are banned, adding an extra desire.
Herf
A colloquial term which describes the act of taking a draw on a cigar. This can also refer to a gathering of cigar lovers.
Humidifier
A humidifier is used to regulate the relative humidity to ensure that cigars are optimally conditioned. Most humidifiers maintain a 65% to 73% humidity. A humidistat is the device that actively controls the humidity within the Humidifier.
Humidor
After the cigars are conditioned they are optimally stored in a humidor which ensures that they are not exposed to abject conditions.
Hygrometer
The hygrometer measures the humidity within the Humidifier to ensure that it is optimally conditioned.
