As of today e cigarettes are no longer allowed to be sold to people under the age of 18, under the new law e cigarettes will now have the same regulations as other tobacco products.
The new law means that e cigarettes and e cigarette liquids will now be regulated in the same manner tobacco products are regulated.
This means that e cigarettes can no longer be sold to people under the age of 18 and it will be illegal to buy the products for someone who is under the age of 18.
Retailers that are found to be breaking this law could face a fixed penalty notice of £50 or fined up to £2,500.
This new regulation also states that there is a restriction on the levels of nicotine that is allowed to be sold, as a way to help aid in quitting smoking. E cigarettes with the nicotine content of over 20mg/ml has been licensed by the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which means it can be sold to people under the age of 18.
David Lodge, Head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service said, “As with any legislation it is necessary for everyone to be compliant. Trading Standards can provide information to retailers regarding age restricted products and advise on best practise to ensure businesses are doing all they can to prevent under age sales.”
This new regulation has come into force along with the new law that means it is illegal to smoke in a car with a passenger under the age of 18.
These new restrictions have come into force to help reduce the number of young people exposed to second hand smoking, as well as reduce the number of children trying e cigarettes.
